How long a house clean actually takes

Two reasons to care about this. The obvious one is planning: whether you need to be out, whether it fits a lunch break, whether the place will be ready before guests arrive.

The less obvious one is that duration is the easiest way to sanity-check a quote. Cleaning takes the time it takes, so if a company quotes a four bedroom house at ninety minutes, they are describing a tidy rather than a clean. The number of hours is where an unrealistic promise shows first.

Standard cleans, by home size

One cleaner, home in reasonable condition, nothing unusual:

• One bedroom condo: two to three hours.
• Two bedroom condo: three to four hours.
• Three bedroom house: three to five hours.
• Four bedrooms and up: usually a two-person visit, so it still finishes inside a working day.

A second cleaner does not halve the time exactly, because two people cannot work the same bathroom, but it comes close on larger homes. On a one bedroom condo a second person mostly gets in the way.

Every home and every type of clean, in one table

The same numbers as above, side by side, because the question people actually ask is some version of "how long for a three bedroom".

Two cleaners shorten the clock but not by half. Some of a clean is genuinely parallel, one person in the kitchen while the other does bathrooms, and some of it is not, like waiting for a floor to dry.

Deep, move-out and post-renovation take much longer

These are different jobs rather than more careful versions of the same one, and the time reflects that.

• Deep clean: about one and a half to two times a standard clean. Four to five hours for a one bedroom condo, most of a working day for a three bedroom house.
• Move in or move out: three to four hours for an empty one bedroom, most of a day for an empty family home. Considerably longer if the home is not actually empty.
• Post-renovation: roughly twice a standard clean, and often more, because it is done in passes with time in between for dust to resettle.

What a cleaner gets done in two hours, and in three

Worth answering directly, because it is the honest way to check whether an hourly quote covers your home or just visits it.

Two hours is a real clean in a one bedroom condo that is kept up: kitchen, one bathroom, floors, surfaces, beds. In a three bedroom house, two hours is a tidy-up with the bathrooms rushed.

Three hours in a two bedroom covers both bathrooms properly, the kitchen including the hob and sink, every floor vacuumed and washed, surfaces dusted. What it does not cover is baseboards, inside the oven, or hard-water buildup on shower glass. Those belong to a deep clean and take hours the first time, minutes thereafter.

So "is two hours a week enough" has a simple answer: count bathrooms, not square footage. Bathrooms are the slowest rooms in any home and the ones a clean gets judged on. One bathroom, two hours is fine. Three bathrooms, it is not.

Where the hours actually go

Not where most people assume. Ranked by time consumed, for a typical home:

1. Bathrooms. The slowest room per square foot in any home, by a wide margin. Descaling, glass, grout and drying chrome so it does not spot all take real time.
2. Kitchen. Second, and mostly chemistry rather than effort. Degreasing needs dwell time, and standing over it does not speed it up.
3. Clutter on surfaces. The biggest variable nobody counts. A counter with twelve things on it takes roughly three times as long as an empty one, because everything is lifted, wiped under and put back.
4. Floors. Genuinely fast, and the part that scales with square footage. This is why a big open-plan home can clean quicker than a small chopped-up one.

What makes a visit run long

Honestly, and in rough order of how often it happens:

• The home has not been cleaned thoroughly in a long time, so the visit is fighting a backlog it was not priced for.
• Surfaces are covered. See above, this one is enormous.
• Pets, particularly heavy shedding, which adds a pass everywhere rather than one job in one room.
• Hard water buildup that needs dwell time rather than scrubbing.
• Access problems at the start, which come out of the cleaning time rather than being added to the end.

The first one is why we say a first visit should often be a deep clean. A standard clean on a home with real buildup spends the whole visit on the backlog and finishes looking like nobody came.

Why the duration is our problem and not your invoice

We quote flat rates on the home, not hourly on the clock. If a visit takes five hours when we estimated four, the price does not move.

That is the meaningful difference between flat and hourly pricing, and it is worth understanding before comparing two quotes. Hourly sounds transparent, but it means you are buying time rather than a finished home, so the risk of a slow day sits with you. A three hour minimum is three hours whether or not the kitchen got finished.

The one thing we will not do is quietly discover the home is much bigger or much worse than described and adjust afterwards. If that happens we call before starting, not after.

Do you need to be home?

No, and most of our recurring customers are not. If you would rather be out, the timings above are what you need for planning. If you would rather be in, that is completely fine too, and it makes no difference to how long it takes.

For a first visit some people prefer to be there for the opening twenty minutes to point things out, then leave. That is often the best of both.
